Winter Layering Basics

I frequently fluctuate from being too hot to being too cold. I want to dress warmly in the winter, but I don’t want to wear a lot of bulky pieces. Nothing is worse than layering until you feel like that little boy from the π‘ͺπ’‰π’“π’Šπ’”π’•π’Žπ’‚π’” π‘Ίπ’•π’π’“π’š and you can’t move your arms. I don’t particularly like wearing coats. Honestly, I think I only own 2 coats: a long black wool coat and a trench coat, which I only wear to dressier events.

Being warm doesn’t mean you need to forfeit style. A few simple tricks are all that are needed. Forego the one bulky coat and instead, layer pieces decisively to remain warm and on-trend all through the winter season. The best thing about layers is that they can be mixed and matched or worn independently as the weather condition changes over the course of the day. So, keep reading for some ways to layer without the bulk or sacrificing style.

First, just like building a house, you need to start with a good foundation- a fitted base layer. The most common mistake people make is a styling bulky piece over another bulky piece. A long sleeve t-shirt, thin turtleneck or a thin thermal top are the perfect base layer because they will give you warmth without bulk.

Heavy sweaters or sweatshirts usually come to mind when we think about staying warm. They aren’t the best for layering, even though they can keep you warm. Adding depth and visual interest to your clothes is the goal of layering. For the second layer, you need to add a lightweight piece which will give you warmth and allow for movement. A lightweight knit sweater, blazer or cardigan is the perfect choice.Β

The thickest layer goes last. For many, this is where your winter coat comes in. Again, I’m not a fan of big, bulky coats. So depending on my outfit, I opt for shackets, cardigans or vests. I purchased a velvet duster last year and often wear it as my last layer. Ponchos are another terrific option!

Don’t forget hats, gloves and scarves! These add extra warmth and can also be worn as layering items. The ideal area to inject some personality and fun into your outfit is with accessories. Select complementary-colored accessories or go for a bold accessory.
