Making A Statement

In my blogs, I discuss statement pieces frequently. I love a good statement piece! I believe it helps me express my true style more fully and sparks my creativity. Are statement pieces an important part of your wardrobe?

Good fundamental pieces in your collection usually serve as the foundation of a strong wardrobe. But adding personality (aka statement pieces) can be fun, express creativity and often give your outfit a unique and finished look.

Statement pieces don’t have to be overly dramatic, flashy, or showy. They may be stylish, feminine, in a striking color or pattern or have an intriguing shape or detail. Statement pieces can also be pieces of clothing; they are not limited to accessories. The crucial thing to keep in mind, in my opinion, is that when you add a statement piece and gaze in the mirror, you should instantly feel “𝑶𝑯 𝒀𝑬𝑨𝑯!"

So, what exactly are statement pieces then? How may statement pieces be used? How do you incorporate them in your outfit? Coastal Loft is here to help!

In this blog, we’ll define statement pieces, offer some advice on how to incorporate them into your wardrobe, and tell you how to style them in a way that looks effortless yet chic. No matter what your style is, there is sure to be something here for you since we’ll be covering accessories and apparel.

So let’s start by talking about how to pick your statement piece. You must take the event you will be attending into account when selecting your statement piece because it will dictate what is appropriate. Let’s begin with work or work events, items like a statement top or blouse, a scarf or shoes in a bright hue can help your ensemble stand out while still looking professional and stylish for the office or work occasions. Next, for a casual event like a girls day or date night, you can be a bit more daring or add some flair by adding a statement piece of clothing such as a bold graphic tee, bold print top or pants, a statement bag or statement shoes. Recently, I had a casual community event to attend and I started off with distressed denim and fun graphic tee combo. I thought the outfit was pretty good, but I thought it needed a bit more pizzazz. I added a black blazer and cuffed the sleeves, put on some fun chunky earrings and I finished it off with some colorful Converse sneakers, and immediately I was like ”𝒀𝒆𝒑 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒊𝒕!"

Similar to casual events, outdoor events can also be used as an opportunity to get creative and go bold but for these events, you can also add statement accessories such as a fun hat or oversized sunglasses.

Lastly, formal events such as weddings require a slightly different approach. For these occasions, it is advisable to opt for statement jewelry, such as a bold earring or necklace. Statement clothing should be avoided as it can be overly dramatic for these occasions.

When it comes to statement pieces, like many fashion trends, there are some fundamental guidelines that you should follow. The first guideline is to ensure that the statement piece is appropriate for the occasion.

We all know the 𝗞𝗜𝗦𝗦 motto, “𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘪𝘵 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘺”. This goes for adding statement pieces too. When you’re wearing a statement piece like a statement blazer, a statement printed skirt or dress, keep the rest of your outfit simple like neutral color slacks, top and shoes that complement your statement piece.

Next, accessorize strategically. Don’t overload your outfit with too many statement pieces. Sure, statement pieces can really make your outfit stand out – but make sure you pick pieces that complement your outfit, not compete with it. For instance, if you’re wearing a statement necklace, keep your earrings and bracelets simple. Or visa versa, if you are wearing chunky bracelets or earrings keep your other pieces simple. Our chunky chain bracelets are a perfect statement piece!

If you like to mix and match accessories, try mixing metals or pieces of a complementary color. For example, if your outfit is red add statement pieces that are pink and orange. One of my favorite outfits is a classic blue and white striped button down, navy blazer and white denim with yellow statement pieces.

Statement apparel pieces are often versatile and basically perfect for every season. Looking to add some statement pieces to your wardrobe? Here are some suggestions:

  • 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒛𝒆𝒓 - versatile because they can be dressed up or down. Add a graphic tee or basic tee and denim for a casual look or a blouse and dress slacks for a dressier outfit.
  • 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑻𝒆𝒆 - Graphic tees are literally the perfect statement piece! The sky's the limit on style and what you want to express. Wear alone in summer and in the winter, just add a leather or denim jacket.
  • 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑺𝒌𝒊𝒓𝒕 – versatile because it can span seasons. In the summer, pair with a simple tee and sandals and in the winter with a sweater and ankle boots.
  • 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑪𝒐𝒂𝒕 - I have to preface this by saying, when I think of a statement coat, I think of Doris Day. For those that do not know me well, I am an avid Doris Day fan for her comedic acting but her style as well. Her outfits were iconic. Her coat always coordinated with her outfit. Anyway, a statement coat is also a piece that can be dressed up or down. You can wear it over a sweater and jeans or over a dress for a more formal event. I used to have a red double breasted coat that I loved. I literally wore it everywhere and, at the time, I never thought of it as a statement piece. It was bold but I always felt my outfits looked terrific when I wore it.
  • 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒆𝒔 – Shoes can elevate any outfit!! Think Fun colorful sneakers or flats for summer or boots or loafers for winter. I love to pair a bright shoe or an animal print shoe with a neutral outfit! It makes the outfit pop!
  • 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑩𝒂𝒈𝒔 – These can add a pop of color to any outfit. In the summer, choose a bright colorful bag and in winter select a textured bag such as fur, metallic or one adorned with metal accents to complement your outfit. You can also make a statement bag by adding fun bold guitar straps!

When you’re shopping for statement pieces or selecting a piece for your outfit, make sure you’re choosing statement pieces that match your style and will complement your outfit. The most important thing to remember is to have fun. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors, textures and prints to elevate your style and outfit.

    And always remember….𝔻𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕤 𝕦𝕟𝕒𝕡𝕠𝕝𝕠𝕘𝕖𝕥𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕪!!
